-- skip to content home about us memorial did you know? gallery quotes donations contact us home -- women’s land army tribute ‘ ‘r emembering the work of the women’s land army and timber corps with a lasting memorial’’ during the war years, with the men away fighting, it was up to volunteer girls to work our rural lands, to help feed the war effort and the nation as well as helping to maintain wood supplies, hence the references to these young girls as land girls and lumber jill’s. there is now a national monument within the national memorial arboretum in alrewas in staffordshire recognising what these girls achieved for our country. the staffordshire branch of the women’s food & farming union (wfu) organised a fundraising campaign to provide a lasting memorial to the women’s land army and women’s timber corps which has been sited within the arboretum and was unveiled on tuesday 21st october 2014. latest news we did it !! date of unveiling: the wla tribute memorial was unveiled and dedicated in the presence of hrh the countess of wessex gcvo on the afternoon of tuesday 21st october 2014 . thank you to everyone who came on that very windy and memorable day – you all made the day so special. 400 wonderful land girls and lumber jills attended, braving the wind and rain and with their families and friends present, there were over 2000 people present. we especially thank hrh the countess of wessex gcvo who, despite her arrival being delayed by the high winds, stayed with us all at the nma for a much longer time than was scheduled in order to meet and speak to as many of the land girls and lumber jills there as possible. please see our gallery page for photos of the day. fundraising nearly £100,000 was raised, with many thanks to everyone who so generously donated towards the memorial or supported one of our fundraising events. our sculptor – denise dutton , from leek in staffordshire. denise created a beautiful, life like and detailed life and a quarter sized sculpture of a land girl and a lumber jill. special thanks denise would like to sincerely thank the following people who have been so very kind and helpful in loaning costumes and implements for use as reference for the sculpture: pauline loven – loan of breeches for photo shoot notty hornblower – land girls trousers, authentic pair including darning! apple tree lane costumes – for the loan of costumes for a photography session as well as subsequent loan gordon & monica cope – pitchfork john & jill goosey – long, bow handle axe and gin trap ..and a very kind lady who supplied me with a ‘tidy’ dead rat!! marshalls stancliffe stones staffordshire wfu would like to thank marshalls stancliffe stones for providing a sandstone plinth on which to set the sculpture. their generous support was very much appreciated. donate to us via paypal help our cause instantly! follow us on twitter “they have obeyed the call of duty in the nation's hour of need and britain owes them an everlasting debt.” hm queen elizabeth [later, the queen mother] 21 october 1950 copyright womens land army tribute 2013 website by twilight web design - hosted by pixeno
